Wheel of Life – Significant Other or Intimacy
This area of the Wheel of Life generates a lot of interesting discussion when completed in a group wellness education program such as those provided for employees by their employers. No, this isn’t the life area in which you’re expected to rate your level of satisfaction with your sex life. Although sexual satisfaction may be considered, it’s only part of a larger picture.
Individual expectations and life situations significantly impact this area of life. Our expectations differ based on whether we are in a long-term relationship, looking for a relationship or uninterested in a relationship. Other life areas also impact this one. For example, parents focusing on raising young children may not have a high level of satisfaction in this area. Completing the Wheel of Life may lead to a renewed focus on romance.
In a recent company wellness program in which participants were paired to discuss a life area in which they would like to improve, two participants with very little in common later shared with the group their low scores in this life area which were for very different reasons. One participant was a young married woman who shared that this life area was low for her because she and her husband were busy raising young children. Her discussion partner was a mature single female who shared that she also had a low level of satisfaction but for a very different reason. She was focusing on other areas of her life and was very satisfied in general but upon completing the Wheel of Life determined that she would like to focus more on meeting people with similar interests and possibly getting back into dating. It was in this company wellness program that another participant spoke up in the group discussion to share that even though she was a mature single woman, her level of satisfaction was very high because she wasn’t looking for a significant other. Again, our expectations and our life situations are the key to assessing our levels of satisfaction.
