Wheel of Life – Personal Development
The area of personal development needs some definition for the purpose of this article but the benefit of a fairly vague concept is that those who complete the wheel of life can give their own interpretation to this area when they are assessing their level of satisfaction. Personal development refers to the unique opportunities to grow as thinking, feeling human beings as we progress along the journey of life. For many of us there are spiritual aspects that we reflect upon when exploring this area of our lives. We may also wish to address opportunities for learning in addition to formal education. Perhaps we’ve always been interested in meditation or the environment but we haven’t committed the necessary time required to be knowledgeable or proficient about this subject. There may be something that we’ve always wanted to do, such as volunteering for a worthwhile cause which becomes obvious when we explore this area. We may discover that we have talents we would like to develop such as music, art or writing.
Many of us may have postponed personal development to achieve other goals in the career, family or money areas of the wheel of life. Completing this assessment may bring clarity to a vague sense of dissatisfaction and provide direction for achieving greater life balance. Often in response to low levels of satisfaction in this area, clients in personal wellness coaching or company wellness programs opt to set goals to further explore this area or search for greater inspiration. Many clients find practicing techniques from positive psychology on a daily basis such as keeping a gratitude journal or writing thank you letters to significant people in their lives to be helpful.
For many of us, personal development/education is a life area that consistently is given little time and energy because it may not be a pressing need. The concerns we have in this area of our lives may receive little attention unless we make a commitment to focus upon what may appear to be a desire or wish. An example of this was my interest in Tai Chi. For years, I was intrigued with Tai Chi. I took a class at a local recreation center but dropped out due to my frustration with my progress. I bought a DVD so I could learn at home but did not find it a helpful way to learn. Finally, I made a commitment to find a class and actively searched for an organization that taught Tai Chi with positive results. I ended up taking Tai Chi classes for three years. It took eighteen months before I mastered the set of movements well enough to perform the routine outside of class. Now I am able to practice Tai Chi on my own two or three days a week. This experience in self growth has led to similar commitments such as learning a yoga routine I can perform at home. It’s amazing where one small change will lead.
