Wheel of Life – Fun and Recreation
This should be the area of our lives in which we experience the highest level of satisfaction, right? That would be wonderful if it were true but it isn’t what I find when I work with individuals and groups in completing the Wheel of Life. Most of us neglect this area. In fact, for many of us it is consistently the lowest area when assessed. Yes, there are certainly personalities who make anything fun. Those folks take themselves and others lightly and raise the spirits of those around them with their lively, humorous approach.
This area of the Wheel of Life purposefully has two dimensions; fun and recreation. The above example is an illustration of fun. Fun can describe our outlook and how we approach life. We can’t put fun into our schedules. We achieve fun by choosing to approach each situation with energy, optimism and humor. Recreation refers to activities that give us a break from routine and thereby refresh and rejuvenate. Often we find that we also have “fun” when we are engaged in recreational activities.
Once again, as described in other articles on the areas of the Wheel of life, what we perceive as fun and the activities we choose for recreation are uniquely individual. Often they are reflections of our personality types; introvert or extrovert, planned or spontaneous, etc. A work-sponsored golf outing may be fun and recreational to someone who enjoys getting out of the office and meeting new people or it may be a tedious obligation to the person who is thinking only of how much work is piling up and feels resentful about not having a choice.
